Crossing Over (2009)

Crossing Over (2009)

Crossing Over is a Wayne Kramer written and directed movie that fell through the cracks.  Kramer is known for Running Scared (2006), The Cooler (2003), and most recently Pawn Shop Chronicles (2013)Running Scared was excellent and The Cooler and Pawn Shop Chronicles were both very solid films.  Crossing Over did not appear to me like it would be any good.  I wanted to give it a try however, because Kramer usually makes quality movies and the noteworthy cast includes Harrison Ford, Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd, Jim Sturgess, Cliff Curtis, Alice Eve, Alice Braga, Mahershala Ali, Josh Gad, Michael Cudlitz, and Marshall Manesh.

Crossing Over

Crossing Over is about multiple stories of immigration to the United   States.  It follows multiple immigrants from all over the world who are trying to become legal citizens in Los Angeles.  Some go through the proper process of trying to become legal citizens, while others try to do so illegally or skip the process altogether.  Sometimes their stories intertwine and other times they do not.  The film also follows the lives of the people who are trying to help these immigrants to become legal and also the ones who are trying to deport them.  It deals with how sometimes mixing different cultures together can clash and how sometimes it can bring people closer together.  It is all different perspectives on immigration in America.

The movie jumps all over the place from story to story.  There is not a lot of character development because the movie is trying to tell too many stories instead of concentrating on one.  As a result, it is hard to feel anything for the characters and it turns into a jumbled mess.

Crossing Over Liotta Judd

Ford gave a standout performance in the film.  He was not given a lot to work with, but he managed to be likable anyway.  He single-handedly tried to hold the broken pieces of the movie together, but there is only so much that one actor can do.

Overall the movie was hard to enjoy because it jumped around way too much.  It was a waste of a quality cast and it was a waste of time.  This is by far Wayne Kramer’s worst movie.

Crossing Over Curtis Ford

I rate this movie a 4 on a scale of 1-10.

Buy, rent, or run?  Run.

Note:  Michael Cudlitz has been in 3 Wayne Kramer movies: Running Scared, Crossing Over and Pawn Shop Chronicles.

Jim Sturgess and Josh Gad were both in the film 21 (2008) together.

It’s always interesting to me to find different movie connections.

Elysium (2013)

Elysium Poster 2

Elysium (2013)

The Definition of Elysium is a place or condition of ideal happiness.  The sci-fi film takes place in the year 2154.  The earth is way overpopulated and very rundown.  The poor people live on earth while the rich live on an enormous space station.  The space station is a world in itself and it is rightfully named Elysium.  Elysium is a man-made utopia.  Life on Elysium is basically perfect.  The air is better quality, and they have machines that cure most diseases and injuries.  The poor people on earth desperately want to live on Elysium and the rich want to keep everyone else out.  The Elysium government kills or captures intruders on site.

Elysium Elysium

Max (Matt Damon) has wanted to go to Elysium his whole life.  After a tragic turn of events, Max gets sick and has only a short amount of time left to live.  With nothing left to lose, he decides to do everything in his power to get to Elysium and get healed or die trying.

Elysium Damon Fighting

The movie is written and directed by Neill Blomkamp and the rest of the noteworthy cast includes Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, William Fichtner, Wagner Moura, Josh Blacker, Jose Pablo Cantillo, and Faran Tahir.

I hoped for more from this film.  The special effects and futuristic technology in the film were outstanding, but the movie’s premise was a little shaky.  The story was very predictable and I felt that not enough of it was spent on Elysium.

Elysium Foster Fichtner

The film was more about trying to get to Elysium than actually taking place on Elysium and that was a little disappointing.

Foster was probably as chilling as she has ever been.  She played her part almost too well.

Damon was as good as he usually is.

Copley was a fun weirdo.

Elysium Robot Fire

Movies that are set way in the future normally show either amazing advancement in technology or the earth on the verge of destruction.  This film showed both.

Overall, Elysium is an exciting, action thrill-ride complete with cool ideas and some quality acting, but a flawed story riddled with predictability.  It’s a popcorn film.  Sit back, relax, and you’ll probably still have a good time.

Elysium Damon Car

I rate this movie a 7.5 on a scale of 1-10.

Buy, rent, or run?  Rent.

Sci-Fi lovers rejoice.  Elysium is coming.

Elysium takes place in the year 2154.  The rich live on a space station and the poor live on Earth, but the Earth is in shambles.  The rich are trying to protect their way of life, but the poor want in.

With an estimated $100,000,000 budget, the filmmakers are banking on Matt Damon and Jodie Foster to make Elysium a monster summer blockbuster.

It is written and directed by Neill Blomkamp who is most known for directing District 9 (2009).

The movie also stars William Fichtner, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Michael Shanks, Sharlto Copley, Talisa Soto, Ona Grauer, Terry Chen, Wagner Moura, Johnny Cicco, and Faran Tahir.

The film looks like it will be rich with special effects and action.  This one looks like a must-see.

The movie is set to release on 8/9/13.
