Killing Season (2013)

Killing Season Poster

Killing Season (2013)

John Travolta has not been making as many films as he used to.  Ever since his son died in 2009, he has made noticeably fewer movies.

It seems like Travolta has maybe gone off the deep end because his characters have gotten angrier and more intense.  His role in Killing Season appeared like it was going to continue this trend.  The pairing of Robert De Niro opposite Travolta as another darker character was enough to make me want to see the film.  Travolta out for revenge on De Niro on screen is bound to be entertaining.

Killing Season is about a retired war-hardened veteran (Robert De Niro) who is trying to live a quiet life in a remote cabin in the wilderness when a man from his past (John Travolta) comes back to hunt him.

Killing Season Travolta Hunting

The film was directed by Mark Steven Johnson and the rest of the noteworthy cast includes Milo Ventimiglia and Elizabeth Olin.

The movie touches briefly on the Bosnian war, which I found interesting because I knew nothing about it.

I thought that Travolta pulled off a Serbian accent quite well.  Along with his short, dark hair, facial hair, and eyebrows, he was believable as a Serbian.  He certainly continued his recent trend of grittier characters and he was a likable bad guy.

De Niro has showed no sign of slowing down even at the age of 70.  He ran around in the woods and held his own against the younger Travolta.

Killing Season De Niro

The film was a drawn out battle between two aging veterans in the style of The Most Dangerous Game (1932).  One man hunted the other while the other man fought to survive.

The movie was a little too predictable at times.  However, the quality acting, moderately intense action, and the built up tension throughout the film was enough to make up for where it was lacking, and ultimately made the movie worth watching.

Without spoiling the film, I think that the movie would have benefited from having more time spent hunting.  If the chase was a little more spread out, the film might have been less predictable.

Killing Season De Niro Travolta Cheers

The movie is a 2 man show.  The bottom line is if you are a fan of De Niro or Travolta, then you will probably enjoy Killing Season.

I rate this movie a 6.5 on a scale of 1-10.

Buy, rent, or run?  Rent.

Trailer for Escape Plan (2013)

Escape Plan Poster

Escape Plan (2013) (click on the title for my full review.)

Grandpa Stallone and Grandpa Schwarzenegger are both at it again.  This time Sylvester plays a prison escape artist.  After finding a way to break out of a number of prisons, he designed a new prison where escaping is near impossible.  Of course, eventually he finds himself framed and locked up in the very prison that he created.  Arnold is on the inside with him.  Now Stallone must breakout in order to track down the party responsible for getting him locked up.

The film is directed by Mikael Hafstrom and the cast includes Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Caviezel, Vincent D’Onofrio, Vinnie Jones, Sam Neill, 50 Cent (lol), and Amy Ryan.

The movie reminds me a bit of Face/Off (1997) simply because in that film John Travolta‘s character (with Nicolas Cage‘s face) agrees to go under cover and be locked up in a high-tech prison.  Eventually the only people that know he is undercover find themselves dead and he is forced to try to escape if he wants to get back to his real life.

How does 50 Cent keep getting parts in movies?

Although Stallone and Schwarzenegger are both maybe a little too ancient to be making this type of movie, I think that somehow they will pull it off.  Either way, I will be there to give you my take on it.

The film is set to release on 10/18/13.

Killing Season (2013) (Click on the title for my full review.)

The cast includes Robert De Niro, John Travolta, Milo Ventimiglia, and Elizabeth Olin.

The film is written by Evan Daugherty  and directed by Mark Steven Johnson.

DeNiro and Travolta play veterans of the same war who have become friends.  Eventually their friendship turns sour and they wage a new war against each other.

Both actors may be getting old (especially DeNiro), but this movie looks entertaining and intriguing enough for me to want to see it.

The film is set to release on 7/12/13.

13 Awesome Actors, 13 Awful Movies

Unfortunately I had the displeasure of viewing these vile movies.  I was duped into thinking that each one of these films could do no wrong because of the awesome actors that were in them.  Boy was I wrong.  Do yourself a favor and stay as far away from these movies as you can get.

Anthony Hopkins: Alexander (2004)

Brad Pitt: Killing Them Softly (2012)

Daniel Day-Lewis: The Boxer (1997)

George Clooney: Syriana (2005)

Jeff Bridges: The Contender (2000)

John Travolta: Battlefield Earth (2000)

Johnny Depp: Before Night Falls (2000)

Kevin Costner: Waterworld (1995)

Kevin Spacey: HurlyBurly (1998)

Morgan Freeman: Dreamcatcher (2003)

Nicolas Cage: The Wicker Man (2006)

Robin Williams: The Night Listener (2006)

Tom Cruise: Interview with the Vampire (1994)

When I look at this list, I can only ask myself one question: What were they thinking?
