Teaser Trailer for Interstellar (2014)

Interstellar Movie poster

Interstellar (2014)

Christopher Nolan is one of those directors that only directs superb movies.  He has yet to really strike out.  Interstellar appears like it will follow his pattern of greatness.

The film is about explorers who discover a wormhole that allows them to travel very long distances through space.

The description doesn’t sound very special, but the film is written by Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathan Nolan.  Christopher Nolan directs and the noteworthy cast includes Matthew McConaughey, Casey Affleck, Wes Bentley, Michael Caine, John Lithgow, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, David Oyelowo, Topher Grace, and Ellen Burstyn.

I will pretty much guarantee that Interstellar will be awesome.   It has a great cast and excellent writers and director.  It’s just too bad that we have to wait almost a year until it releases.

The film is set to release on 11/07/14.

Trailer for The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

The Wolf of Wall Street Poster

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

The Wolf of Wall Street is based on a true story about a stockbroker named Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) who went to jail for 20 months after he refused to cooperate in a securities fraud case.

Jordan Belfort wrote the book that the film is based on and Terence Winter wrote the screenplay.

This film looks like it has Oscar written all over it.  Martin Scorsese directs DiCaprio in yet another film.  Once again the supporting cast is superb and includes Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, Jon Bernthal, Jon Favreau, Ethan Suplee, Kyle Chandler, Spike Jonze, Rob Reiner, and Cristin Milioti.

This movie is almost guaranteed to be great.  I will certainly see it in the theatre.

The film is set to release on 11/15/13.

Mud (2012)

Mud Poster

Mud (2012)

There has been some Oscar buzz around the grapevine involving Matthew McConaughey‘s performance in Mud.  I think that he did a superb job in his role, but I don’t think that the role itself is Oscar worthy.  They might just nominate him to give him a little bit of well-deserved recognition, but he won’t win.

Mud (2013) Matthew McConaughey

McConaughey has always been a very likable actor.  He carries himself well and always brings a lot of energy to his characters.  He is usually in excellent shape and the ladies love him.  I think that is why he has made so many “chick flicks.”  Because of his many romantic movies, I think that a lot of people, including the Academy don’t take him seriously as an actor.  I believe that is why he gets overlooked when it comes time to give out awards.  It’s a shame because the guy certainly is capable of an Oscar worthy performance, just look at The Lincoln Lawyer (2011), Two for the Money (2005), and Frailty (2001), to name a few.

In Mud, Matthew McConaughey plays a man named Mud.  He is an outlaw living like a bum on an island in Arkansas.  Two teenage boys (Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland) get more than they bargained for when they meet Mud after they find a boat high up in the trees on the same island.

Mud Boat tree

The film was written and directed by Jeff Nichols.

The rest of the noteworthy cast includes Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Paulson, Ray McKinnon, Sam Shepard, Michael Shannon, Paul Sparks, and Joe Don Baker.

Mud was not exactly what I expected.  I guess I didn’t know quite what to expect.  The film was unique.  The story was original which these days is a little rare.  It was a nice change of pace to see a one-of-a-kind movie instead of a sequel or a remake of another movie.

Being basically unknown actors, I thought that Sheridan and Lofland both did an exceptional job of carrying their part of the movie.

Shepard and Shannon were both fun additions to the film.

Film Review Mud

I’m not a huge fan of Witherspoon, but I felt that she did an okay job in the film.  However, I think that her character needed more screen time.  That isn’t her fault.  The movie could have been improved upon if her part of the story was better told.  It just felt like her part was lacking something.  I left the theatre thinking that the movie was really good, but something was missing.  Her character could have provided that something.

The film did a fine job of developing most of its characters and building suspense.  It was intriguing.  It kept you wanting to know what was going to happen next and was not very predictable.

Unfortunately the movie is in limited release.  It is a little bit surprising to me that the film is not in wide release.  It is the first movie that I have seen in a long time that I could not sit in the part of the theatre that I wanted.  I had my choice between the second or first rows.  That is how packed the theatre was.

Mud is worth checking out if you are sick of the same old sequels or remakes that Hollywood keeps regurgitating for your enjoyment week after week.  It’s a nice change of pace to be able to watch a movie that allows the actors to act and counts on their ability and the storyline alone to be entertaining and successful.

Mud Matthew wave

I rate this movie a 8 on a scale of 1-10.

Buy, rent, or run?  Rent.

Note: After watching this movie a second time, I had to raise my initial rating from a 7.5 to an 8.  The film is better than I originally gave it credit for.

Top 13 Disappointing Current Redbox Movies

redbox box and posters

There are many terrible movies out there.  I have avoided renting movies at the Redbox just because they looked bad.  You know which ones that I’m talking about.  The ones that rip off movies that are actually popular by giving them similar titles and making the cover art look remarkably alike, but are actually knock offs that nobody should have to suffer through.  That being said, there are probably worse movies at the Redbox than what are on my list.  My list however, is a compilation of movies that actually looked like they could be good in one way or another.  Something about these movies made me go to the theatre and watch them, or go to the Redbox and rent them.  I made this list to save you time and money.  Don’t get duped like I did.  They might have a good cast.  They might look funny.  They might look scary.  They might look intense and full of good action.  They might look like they have a nice touching story.  They are none of those things (well, sometimes except for the cast).  They are poor excuses for movies.  Stay far away from these awful creations.

With my list I have included the cover art to the movies, so that you know exactly what to avoid.  I have not posted any trailers, because you don’t even want to waste your time with those.  They will trick you.  I have also listed my ratings of each movie.  My ratings are on a scale of 1-10.  My full review will be available for some of the movies.  If the title is highlighted, then you can click on it for my full review.

I do not claim to have seen all of the movies that are currently available to rent at the Redbox, but I have seen 76 of them.  Of those 76 movies, my Top 13 Disappointing Current Redbox Movies are:

The Paperboy (2012)

The Paperboy cover

The Paperboy (2012)

The Paperboy delivers a story riddled with nonsense, boredom, trashy characters, gratuitous vulgarity, and wasted talent.  It was amazing the amount of scenes in the movie that were completely unnecessary.

The film is about a newspaper reporter (Matthew McConaughey) who teams up with his brother (Zac Efron) and a work colleague (David Oyelowo) to investigate the case of a prisoner (John Cusack) who is on death row.  Along the way, they get help from the prisoner’s pen pal girlfriend (Nicole Kidman).

The Paperboy movie

The movie takes it’s time setting the stage for what it is going to be about.  Once you understand the goal that the characters are trying to accomplish, the story takes a left turn and does not come back to the main point until it is no longer relevant.  In other words, the film is left without a purpose and you are left watching characters develop for a story that is hard to follow and no longer matters.

Much of the movie is narrated by Macy Gray.  Gray was an extremely poor choice for a narrator.  She is definitely no Morgan Freeman.  It seemed as if she had trouble reading her lines.  She mumbled her words very slowly and at times, she was hard to understand.  This took even more away from the film and made it harder to follow.

Film Review The Paperboy

Many times I was so bored with the movie that I wanted to turn it off.  Other times I wanted to turn off the movie because of how unnecessarily vulgar and pointless it was becoming.  I should have turned it off.  I wish that I had turned it off, but I wanted to see if it would get any better, and I wanted to be able to tell my readers my honest opinion of the entire film.

The Paperboy had a very capable cast.  They are all mostly good actors, but with the material that they had to work with, they were all doomed.  Nobody had a chance to give a standout performance because the writers had made sure of that with their dreadful dialogue and horrible storyline.

Do not waste your time or money on this worthless excuse for a movie.

I give this movie a 1 on a scale of 1-10.

Buy, rent, or run?  Run and hide!

I think that this movie could easily have won the prize for worst movie of 2012.  I was trying to figure out which movie was worse, this one or Killing Them SoftlyThe Paperboy takes the cake.  Beware!
