The Way, Way Back (2013)

The Way Way Back Poster 2

The Way, Way Back (2013)

Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell both have the ability to be really funny and that is why I thought that The Way, Way Back could be hilarious.  If both of those guys are in the same movie together than it is bound to make you laugh right?

THE WAY, WAY BACK

The movie is about Duncan, a timid 14-year-old boy (Liam James) who is dragged along on a summer vacation with his mother (Toni Collette), her jerk of a boyfriend (Steve Carell), and her boyfriend’s daughter (Zoe Levin).  In order to escape the awkwardness, Duncan ventures off on his own to a nearby water park where he befriends Owen (Sam Rockwell) the manager, and gets a summer job.

The film was written and directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.  The rest of the noteworthy cast includes Allison Janney, Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry, Amanda Peet, River Alexander, Nat Faxon, and Jim Rash.

The Way Way Back Rockwell James

The film did not have a very promising start, and I was worried that it was not going to get any better.  It was a stale dysfunctional drama until Sam Rockwell made his appearance and saved the day, and the movie.  Rockwell turned the film into a “dramedy” and made it worth watching.  The film literally went from awful to entertaining as if Rockwell had just flipped a switch.

Unfortunately, Carell’s character was not funny at all.  Carell is usually pretty excellent when he is in a comedic role, but when his character is all drama, he is hardly likable.

The Way Way Back Dinner Table

The movie was a good story of how uncomfortable life can be sometimes with a divorced parent who is dating again.  Maybe being a child of divorced parents myself, I related to the movie a little bit more than others might.  When you are a kid who is stuck dealing with a boyfriend or girlfriend of one of your parents whom you just don’t like or get along with, it is nice to be able to escape with your friends for support.  I was fortunate enough to be able to do that many times during my childhood.  That is what this movie is about and that is what this movie does a good job depicting.

The Way Way Back Party

It’s not the funniest movie in the world and it’s not the greatest, but it is a touching story that should make you laugh.

I rate this movie a 7 on a scale of 1-10.

Pain & Gain (2013)

Pain and Gain Poster

Pain & Gain (2013)

Michael Bay took a true story about bodybuilding thieves and kidnappers, and chewed it up and spit it out bigger and better than before.  The producer and director has a tendency to go big or go home.  Pain & Gain went huge with a super sized Mark Wahlberg, a bulkier Dwayne Johnson “The Rock”, and an extra beefed up Anthony Mackie.

Pain & Gain Trio

I should not have enjoyed this movie, but I did.  It is supposedly a true story, but you have to believe that with Michael Bay involved, the film could very well be far from the truth.  Everything about the movie was way over-the-top.

Pain & Gain Over the top

The movie was raunchy, vulgar, and went totally off the deep end.  It’s filled with drugs, cussing, nudity, and brutality.  I was caught off guard at how funny the movie was though.  I expected an action/adventure and I got an action/comedy.  The story is pretty twisted and it needed a lot of comedy to help you get through it, so kudos to the filmmakers for recognizing this fact.  The real story was probably not that funny.  The real story was probably not that entertaining either.

If you are not a fan of dark comedy, then you might not like this movie.  It is mostly filled with dark comedy and stupid comedy.  After all, all brawn and no brains is the underlined theme of this film.  The movie could also be considered very offensive.  If you are easily offended, you might not like the film.

Pain & Gain Wahlberg hit

The rest of the notable cast includes Tony Shalhoub, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, Bar Paly, Rebel Wilson, Ken Jeong, Michael Risponi, Larry Hankin, Tony Plana, and Peter Stormare.

The characters were far out, but very well-acted.  The casting was perfect.  I don’t think that you could find a funnier bunch of giants anywhere.  With that being said, if this movie had a different cast, it probably would have just been awful.  I am certain that the actual people that the characters are based on are not nearly as likable as the actors who play them in the movie.

Pain & Gain Wahlberg Pool

With how big Mark Wahlberg is now, if he could go back in time and fight his character in The Fighter (2010), he would beat the crap out of that guy.  He gained 40lbs. to make Pain & Gain and he looks gigantic.  Dwayne Johnson “The Rock” somehow became more enormous for his role.  It just goes to show the dedication that these guys had to make the movie.

Pain & Gain Johnson Crazy

I rate this movie a 7 on a scale of 1-10.

Trailer for Rapture-Palooza (2013)

Rapture-Palooza Poster

Rapture-Palooza (2013)

The movie is a comedy about the end of the world brought on by the devil.  A couple of friends join together to try to save the world by defeating the antichrist.

The movie looks a little Zombieland (2009) -esque,  at least in the comedy sense.  But, I’m sure it won’t be anywhere near as funny or as clever as that film.

Rapture-Palooza is directed by Paul Middleditch and stars Anna Kendrick, Craig Robinson, Ken Jeong, Rob Corddry, John Francis Daley, Thomas Lennon, Tyler Labine, Rob Huebel, and Ana Gasteyer.

I’m not gonna rush out to the theatre to see this one, but I’ll probably catch it when it comes to DVD.

The movie is set to release on 6/7/13.

A dysfunctional “dramedy” that takes place over summer break.

This movie looks appealing to me because it’s a comedy with Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell.  I am a big fan of both of those actors and I think it will be funny to see them both in the same movie together.

The rest of the cast includes AnnaSophia Robb, Toni Collette, Amanda Peet, Maya Rudolph, Allison Janney, Rob Corddry, Jim Rash, Liam James, and Nat Faxon.

The film is directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.

I’m not sure that I’ll rush out to the theatre to see this one, but it definitely looks like it would be worth renting at least.

The film is set to release on 7/5/13.

Top 13 Disappointing Current Redbox Movies

Top 13 Disappointing Current Redbox Movies

redbox box and posters

There are many terrible movies out there.  I have avoided renting movies at the Redbox just because they looked bad.  You know which ones that I’m talking about.  The ones that rip off movies that are actually popular by giving them similar titles and making the cover art look remarkably alike, but are actually knock offs that nobody should have to suffer through.  That being said, there are probably worse movies at the Redbox than what are on my list.  My list however, is a compilation of movies that actually looked like they could be good in one way or another.  Something about these movies made me go to the theatre and watch them, or go to the Redbox and rent them.  I made this list to save you time and money.  Don’t get duped like I did.  They might have a good cast.  They might look funny.  They might look scary.  They might look intense and full of good action.  They might look like they have a nice touching story.  They are none of those things (well, sometimes except for the cast).  They are poor excuses for movies.  Stay far away from these awful creations.

With my list I have included the cover art to the movies, so that you know exactly what to avoid.  I have not posted any trailers, because you don’t even want to waste your time with those.  They will trick you.  I have also listed my ratings of each movie.  My ratings are on a scale of 1-10.  My full review will be available for some of the movies.  If the title is highlighted, then you can click on it for my full review.

I do not claim to have seen all of the movies that are currently available to rent at the Redbox, but I have seen 76 of them.  Of those 76 movies, my Top 13 Disappointing Current Redbox Movies are:
