The Frozen Ground (2013)

The Frozen Ground Poster

The Frozen Ground (2013)

Nicolas Cage and John Cusack have both been pretty much hit or miss for about the last 6 years.  Oddly enough, their downfall started around the same time.  I have been a huge fan of both actors ever since I can remember.  Even though they are both not consistently in great movies any longer, I still give them the benefit of the doubt every time I watch one of their new movies.  I guess I just hope that one day they will bounce back from whatever funk they got themselves into and start making great movies again.  One can always hope right?

So, that is the attitude that I had before watching The Frozen Ground.  I would have been less enthusiastic about wanting to see the movie if it was only Cage or Cusack in it.  But, it’s not just Cage or Cusack, it’s both.  If both of these struggling actors are in the same movie then it is bound to be awesome right?

The film is based on actual events that took place in 1983.  It’s about an Alaska State trooper who teams up with a woman who was able to get away from a serial killer named Robert Hansen.  Together the duo works to find Hansen and bring him to justice for the murders that he has committed.

The movie was written and directed by Scott Walker and the rest of the noteworthy cast includes Vanessa Hudgens, Dean Norris, Kevin Dunn, Radha Mitchell, Michael McGrady, Matt Gerald, and 50 Cent.

The Frozen Ground has an overall dark tone which is fitting because of the dark subject matter.

The movie was missing a lot.  It was hard to follow and full of wasted talent.  There was hardly any character development, so you couldn’t really feel anything for the characters.

The Frozen Ground Cage

It is yet another letdown from Cage and Cusack.  The list of bad movies that each actor continues to make just keeps getting longer.

It really felt like both Cage and Cusack were just going through the motions.  However, the writing and filmmaking overall, really did nothing to help their cause.  Occasionally both actors would show a slight spark that would quickly go out.  I think that if they keep making movies like this one, their careers could be doomed.  It’s a real shame.

The film started out like it could have potential, and then it got boring quickly.  The scenes were choppy and the acting and dialogue all felt forced.

Don’t waste your time or money with The Frozen Ground.  If you would like to try to preserve the memory of when Nicolas Cage and John Cusack both made good movies, don’t watch this one.

I rate this movie a 3 on a scale of 1-10.

Jobs (2013)

Jobs Poster

Jobs (2013)

To me, Ashton Kutcher playing Steve Jobs is a sign that he is trying to shed his pretty boy image.  He has been in a few serious films, but for the most part he has stuck with comedy.  Usually you are unable to take Kutcher’s characters or the movies that he is in seriously.  He has been a likable goofball for the majority of his acting career.  Before watching Jobs, I knew that it had the potential to be a game changer for Ashton Kutcher’s career.  If he played his part well, then in a sense, he could earn his wings and continue making real movies.

Jobs Kutcher

Jobs is inspired by the true story of how Steve Jobs (Ashton Kutcher) co-founded Apple Inc. after dropping out of college and became one of the most innovative creators and entrepreneurs of our time.

The film was directed by Joshua Michael Stern and the rest of the noteworthy cast includes Dermot Mulroney, Matthew Modine, Josh Gad, J.K. Simmons, Ron Eldard, James Woods, Lukas Haas, John Getz, Kevin Dunn, Nelson Franklin, Robert Pine and Elden Henson.

Jobs group garage

Since the movie is inspired by a true story, I would be interested in knowing exactly which parts are true and which parts are fiction.

I will admit that before watching Jobs, I knew hardly anything about Steve Jobs.  I knew that he founded Apple and he had a major role in the company’s success, but that was about it.

As a child, the first computer that my family owned was an Apple Macintosh.  That always stuck with me.  Fast-forward to now and Apple is still the best in the business and always evolving.

Jobs Kutcher Apple

Jobs is an intriguing story about a hippie college dropout with a vision for greatness and an overwhelming passion to follow through on trying to make the world a better place.

This is Kutcher’s best performance as an actor so far.  He did a heck of a job as Jobs.  The movie certainly has the potential to change Ashton Kutcher’s image and I foresee more serious movies in his future.  Is it a game changer for him?  I think that it certainly is.

The rest of the cast did an excellent job in their supporting roles.

Jobs old Kutcher

The film felt a bit long-winded towards the end and it lacked more development of Steve’s family life.  However, the film was uplifting and inspirational.  It’s a worthy tribute to a genius who left his mark on the world.

I rate this movie an 8 on a scale of 1-10.

Top 13 Disappointing Current Redbox Movies

Top 13 Disappointing Current Redbox Movies

redbox box and posters

There are many terrible movies out there.  I have avoided renting movies at the Redbox just because they looked bad.  You know which ones that I’m talking about.  The ones that rip off movies that are actually popular by giving them similar titles and making the cover art look remarkably alike, but are actually knock offs that nobody should have to suffer through.  That being said, there are probably worse movies at the Redbox than what are on my list.  My list however, is a compilation of movies that actually looked like they could be good in one way or another.  Something about these movies made me go to the theatre and watch them, or go to the Redbox and rent them.  I made this list to save you time and money.  Don’t get duped like I did.  They might have a good cast.  They might look funny.  They might look scary.  They might look intense and full of good action.  They might look like they have a nice touching story.  They are none of those things (well, sometimes except for the cast).  They are poor excuses for movies.  Stay far away from these awful creations.

With my list I have included the cover art to the movies, so that you know exactly what to avoid.  I have not posted any trailers, because you don’t even want to waste your time with those.  They will trick you.  I have also listed my ratings of each movie.  My ratings are on a scale of 1-10.  My full review will be available for some of the movies.  If the title is highlighted, then you can click on it for my full review.

I do not claim to have seen all of the movies that are currently available to rent at the Redbox, but I have seen 76 of them.  Of those 76 movies, my Top 13 Disappointing Current Redbox Movies are:
