Trailer for All is Bright (2013)
All is Bright (2013)
In recent years, there have been more and more unhappy Christmas related movies. The holidays bring out the best and the worst in people and sometimes it helps to watch a not so happy holiday movie. This year’s option is All is Bright.
The film is a dark comedy about a recently paroled man named Dennis (Paul Giamatti) who has a lot of trouble trying to find a job because of the poor economy and the fact that he just got out of jail. Dennis takes a job selling Christmas trees with his old friend Rene (Paul Rudd) and the Christmas season proves to not be so bright.
The film is directed by Phil Morrison and the rest of the noteworthy cast includes Sally Hawkins, Amy Landecker, Tatyana Richaud, Colman Domingo, Nikki M. James, and Morgan Spector.
Giamatti usually does not disappoint, but Rudd can be questionable. Regardless, this film looks like it will have some good moments of laughter. It definitely doesn’t look like your average Christmas movie.
The movie was released in select theatres on 10/4/13 and has been on demand since 9/10/13.
So, why am I telling you about this movie now? I am telling you about this now because I have a feeling that this will be one film that slips through the cracks. Most people who actually see this movie will probably be watching it on DVD. It seems to me like it was released too early. I think that it might have done okay in theatres if they had released it in November and done a better job marketing it.
I have noticed a lot more movies this year that have had trouble making it to wide release. Is direct to DVD or on demand the way of the future? I hope not. It would be nice to have a lot of options of movies to see in theatres, instead of simply the films that should make money for production companies. There were so many big blockbuster films that flopped this year and that is hurting the movie business more than people realize. I blame the lack of originality and sequel overdose for this problem.
Trailer for Grudge Match (2013)
Grudge Match (2013)
This Christmas Sylvester Stallone will be boxing Robert De Niro in the film Grudge Match. It’s The Italian Stallion vs. The Raging Bull. That promises to be a Christmas present worth waiting for. My money is on Rocky.
The movie is about two retired boxers who come out of retirement for one final grudge match 30 years after the only time they ever fought.
The movie is directed by Peter Segal and the rest of the noteworthy cast includes Kim Basinger, Kevin Hart, Jon Bernthal, and Alan Arkin.
The film looks basically like another Rocky film. I just want to see if the fight ends by knockout or heart attack.
The movie releases on 12/25/13.
Trailer for All is Lost (2013)
All is Lost (2013) (Click on the title for my full review.)
This is literally a one man show starring Robert Redford. It is written and directed by J.C. Chandor.
The film is about a lone sailer (Robert Redford) who crashes into a shipping container in the middle of the ocean and his boat starts sinking. Using every resource at hand, he tries his best to survive.
The movie looks like Cast Away (2000) except that instead of being stranded on a desert island, Redford is stuck in the middle of the ocean.
It’s a Robert Redford one man show. That is enough for me to want to see it.
The film is set to release on 10/18/13.
Trailer for The Book Thief (2013)
The Book Thief (2013) (Click on the title for my full review.)
This movie is based off of the novel by Markus Zusak. Liesel (Sophie Nelisse) is a young girl without a family in Nazi Germany during WWII. She gets taken in and adopted by a couple who also hide a Jewish boy under their stairs. With all of the terrible things going on around her, Liesel takes comfort in stealing books and sharing them with her new family.
The film was directed by Brian Percival and the rest of the noteworthy cast includes Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson, Ben Schnetzer, Joachim Paul Assbock, Kirsten Block, and Sandra Nedeleff.
I have not read the book, but the movie looks like it could be pretty good. It’s a story that I am not familiar with, but it looks intense.
The movie is set to release on 11/15/13.
Trailer for Her (2013)
Her (2013)
Her is a love story about a lonely antisocial writer (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls for an artificial intelligence operating system.
The film is written and directed by Spike Jonze and the rest of the noteworthy cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Amy Adams, Olivia Wilde, Rooney Mara, and Chris Pratt.
Phoenix is sporting a creeper mustache and seems like he will be as weird as ever. Even though he looks like a weirdo in this movie, I’m sure he will do an awesome job. Part of me jokingly could see Phoenix be his character in real life about 20 years from now. I’m not making fun of him though, he is a great actor. It just looks like he might play his part too well.
They somehow managed to get 4 of the most famous young actresses currently working today in the same film. You don’t see that very often these days.
This film looks like it could be pretty funny in a disturbingly quirky kind of way.
The movie is set to release on 11/20/13.
Trailer for The Monuments Men (2013)
The Monuments Men (2013)
The Monuments Men is based on a true story about a team of art historians and museum curators that are brought together during World War II to save priceless works of art before Hitler has them destroyed.
The film is directed by George Clooney and the noteworthy cast includes George Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Bob Balaban, and Jean Dujardin.
The all-star cast would be enough to make me want to see the film, but this is an intriguing story that I know nothing about.
I would bet money that it gets nominated for an Academy Award for something, and it will likely deserve it.
The film is set to release on 12/18/13.
Trailer for Kick-Ass 2 (2013)
Kick-Ass 2 (2013) (click on the title for my full review.)
Kick-Ass (2010) exceeded my expectations. Kick-Ass 2 appears like it could be concentrating a little bit more on the humor side of things. With the addition of Jim Carrey, the sequel is bound to be funnier than the original.
In the sequel, Red Mist changes his name and wants revenge on Kick-Ass for what he did in the first film. Red Mist gathers his own group of bad guys to take on Kick-Ass and his new Superhero buddies.
The film is written and directed by Jeff Wadlow and the rest of the noteworthy cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Morris Chestnut, Lyndsy Fonseca, Donald Faison, and Clark Duke.
After the first film won me over, I think that the sequel deserves a chance.
The film is set to release on 8/16/13.
Trailer for Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (2013)
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (2013)
Johnny Knoxville dresses up like an old grandpa and is a jackass. It’s Jackass old man style. It’s guaranteed to be stupid and funny, among other things.
The film is directed by Jeff Tremaine.
The movie is set to release on 10/25/13.
