Trailer for Captain Phillips (2013)

Captain Phillips Poster

Captain Phillips (2013)

This film is based on the true story of when an American cargo ship was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009.  This was the first time that this had happened to an American cargo ship in 200 years.

Does anybody remember how America responded to this hijacking?  Do you remember Captain Phillips?

It’s hard to believe that happened about 4 years ago.

If this movie follows the truth closely, I think that it might have the potential to be a quality film and an Oscar contender.

The film is directed by Paul Greengrass.  Billy Ray wrote the screenplay, but Richard Phillips wrote the book “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea” that it is all based off of.

The cast includes Tom Hanks, Catherine Keener, Max Martini, John Magaro, Chris Mulkey, Corey Johnson, David Warshofsky, Yul Vasquez, and Michael Chernus.

Hanks has not had a great part for a while.  Could this be the movie that puts him back into the spotlight?  I will have to be there when it releases to find out.

The film is set to release on 10/11/13.

Teaser Trailer for Gravity (2013)

Houston we have a problem, again.  This time George Clooney and Sandra Bullock are out in space and something has gone terribly wrong.

The movie is written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron.

The special effects look amazing.  I’ll probably have to catch this at some point.  What do you think?

The film is set to release on 10/4/13.

Trailer for Pacific Rim (2013)

Pacific Rim Poster

Pacific Rim (2013)

The earth is under an attack from an alien invasion, so what do the humans do?  We build giant robots to defend ourselves, of course.  Is that not the obvious answer?

Another movie about an alien invasion has been made.  This time, it looks like they mixed the movie with Transformers (2007) and Real Steel (2011).  Apparently this is what writer and director Guillermo Del Toro thinks an alien movie should be like.

The cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorman, Clifton Collins Jr., Robert Maillet, and Heather Doerksen.

I for one, am pretty fed up with movies like this one.  Just how extreme can we possibly make our special effects?  They look so far out in this movie that it all looks fake and does not look interesting to me at all.  This is just my opinion, I’m sure there are people out there that have marked the release date of this movie on their calendars and are planning a midnight showing, but I’m not that guy.  I will gladly skip this movie.  I’m sure it will make millions, but it won’t get any of my money.

The movie is set to release on 7/12/13.

Trailer for The Way, Way Back (2013)

The Way, Way Back (2013) (Click on the title for my full review.)

A dysfunctional “dramedy” that takes place over summer break.

This movie looks appealing to me because it’s a comedy with Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell.  I am a big fan of both of those actors and I think it will be funny to see them both in the same movie together.

The rest of the cast includes AnnaSophia Robb, Toni Collette, Amanda Peet, Maya Rudolph, Allison Janney, Rob Corddry, Jim Rash, Liam James, and Nat Faxon.

The film is directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.

I’m not sure that I’ll rush out to the theatre to see this one, but it definitely looks like it would be worth renting at least.

The film is set to release on 7/5/13.

Trailer for Violet & Daisy (2011) Rumored to release on 6/7/13

Another one of those movies that has been kept on the shelf for one reason or another.  The film was made in 2011 and is rumored to release on 6/7/13.  I say rumored because I think that the original intention was to release the film in 2011, but it continues to be pushed back.  So, who knows, maybe it will be pushed back from being released again.

Movies like this are always intriguing to me because I bet everybody involved in making the movie is just beyond angry that it has not been released yet.  I know that I would be.

I have a feeling that this film has not been released yet partially due to the fact that it is a risky movie to make.  The movie is about a teenage girl duo hit man squad.  With all of the violence going on in our world, it’s probably pretty hard to release a movie about teenage girls who kill people.  With that said, the film looks tastefully made and has a good cast which includes Saoirse Ronan, Alexis Bledel, James Gandolfini, Danny Trejo, Cody Horn, and John Ventimiglia.

It is written and directed by Geoffrey Fletcher.

The film has sparked my interest enough to want to see it, that is if it ever gets taken off of the shelf.

Trailer for Ender’s Game (2013)

Ender's Game Poster

Ender’s Game (2013)

The movie is based off of the famous novel with the same title by Orson Scott Card.

From the preview it appears like the world almost lost a war against aliens.  Now, the remaining human survivors are training children in space to be a different kind of soldier that will hopefully be able to defeat the aliens and save the human race.

It’s a science fiction movie with a big budget and even bigger special effects.

The film is directed by Gavin Hood and stars Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Asa Butterfield, Abigail Breslin, Hailee Steinfeld, Moises Arias, Aramis Knight, Nonso Anozie, Han Soto, and a bunch of kid actors that nobody will recognize.

Kingsley and Butterfield were both in Hugo (2011) together.

The film is destined to be a goldmine for the filmmakers.

I have not read the book, but the movie looks like it could be fun.

It is set to release on 11/1/13.

Trailer for The Heat (2013)

The Heat Poster

The Heat (2013) (click on the title for my full review)

Another comedy for Sandra Bullock.  This movie looks suspiciously similar to Miss Congeniality (2000).  In fact, it could just be part 3 without the oficial title.  Everything about The Heat looks similar to Miss Congeniality.  We have seen this movie before, twice.  I’m sure it will still have its moments of humor, but I think I’ll wait for the DVD.

Besides Bullock, other notable cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Marlon Wayans, Michael Rapaport, Thomas F. Wilson, Bill Burr, Luis Da Silva Jr., Jamie Denbo, and Michael McDonald.

The movie is directed by Paul Feig and is set to release on 6/28/13.

Trailer for R.I.P.D. (2013)

R.I.P.D. Poster

R.I.P.D. (2013) (Click on the title for my full review.)

R.I.P.D. looks like a cross between Beetlejuice (1988) and Men in Black (1997).

The movie is directed by Robert Schwentke and stars Jeff Bridges, Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Bacon, Mary-Louise Parker, Robert Knepper, James Hong, Mike O’Malley, Stephanie Szostak, Devin Ratray, Larry Joe Campbell, Marisa Miller, Josh Sussman, Alexandra East, and Tobias Segal.

This action comedy looks like it will be right up my alley.

The film is set to release on 7/19/13.

Trailer for Star Trek into Darkness (2013)

Star Trek into Darkness Poster

Star Trek into Darkness (2013) (click on the title for my full review)

For those of you who know me, you know that I am not a huge Star Trek fan.  With that being said, Star Trek into Darkness actually looks semi-decent.  I just may have to check it out when it releases.  If I like it, I may have to go back and give some of the other movies a second look.  This new Star Trek does not look like your average Star Trek.  Even the poster looks intriguing for a Star Trek movie.

The film is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Alice Eve, Jon Lee Brody, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Nolan North, Nick Tarabay, Bruce Greenwood, Peter Weller, Tom Archdeacon, Heather Langenkamp, and Christopher Doohan.

The movie is set to release on 5/17/13.

Trailer for Grown Ups 2 (2013)

Grown Ups 2 Poster

Grown Ups 2 (2013)

Can Adam Sandler do us all a favor and stop making unwatchable garbage.  He has not made a good movie for years.  Arguably his best movie in the last 7 years was Just Go with It (2011) and that is not saying much.  Click (2006) was probably his last good movie.  The majority of the movies that he made before Click were all hilarious in their own way.  After Click, all of Sandler’s movies turned into pure excrement.

Was the first Grown Ups (2010) not bad enough?  Do we really need to be subjected to a sequel?

In the first Grown Ups, Adam Sandler got all of his almost washed-up, aging comedian friends together (Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Tim Meadows, Dan Patrick, Colin Quinn, Maya Rudolph, Blake Clark, Norm MacDonald, Jonathan Loughran, and Dennis Dugan)to make a not so funny, not very family friendly, family comedy also with the likes of Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, Steve Buscemi, and Sandler’s wife Jackie Sandler and 2 daughters Sadie Sandler and Sunny Sandler.

So now 3 years later, he brought most of them all back together again and made a sequel.  Is it safe to assume that they are all actually washed-up this time since they are back for more?  He had to try to top the first one, so he added Taylor Lautner, Milo Ventimiglia, Andy Samberg, David Henrie, Alexander Ludwig, Steve Austin, Taran Killam, Nick Swardson, Shaquille O’Neal, Cheri Oteri, Erin Heatherton, and Melanie Hutsell to the mix.

I can’t believe Sandler pulled it off, but this movie looks worse than the first one.  I will most certainly skip this film in the theatre and I won’t even waste my money at the Redbox.  It would have to be free for me to watch this, and even that will be risky.

Dennis Dugan directed both Grown Ups movies.

The trash will be picked up on, I mean the movie will release on 7/12/13.
